CROCHET:  A delightful crochet pattern for a 1970s Nativity set . This pattern contains instructions for making all the little pictures in the pictures, including the animals and the star and the Camel and camel driver. Quite a cast!

However- don’t be daunted as even just the central three figures would make a charming Christmas display or gift, or maybe an angel or two! The crochet is not difficult, and the patterns are written in a straightforward style with full instructions and templates for any extra bits such as wings, and how to reinforce the bodies with card.

PLEASE NOTE: I have placed each figure clearly onto its own page, instead of the tiny cramped text and dingy muddled pages of the original.( I t took ages but now it is so much more usable when crocheting)

If you made this for a church or school display, you could use the individual instructions to add in characters from your own group of teachers or congregation-or add figures each year.

The pattern comes from a French magazine, translated into English, and contains lots more characters than the usual ones of Virgin Mary, St Joseph, baby Jesus, angels, wise men and shepherds. There are also men and women of varying occupations such as a flower seller, knife grinder, miller, etc with all their props. I presume these are from French folk law as I haven’t heard of these in English versions of the nativity story. However, the “cast of thousands” that you could produce from the variations would be great fun.
