KNITTING: A copy of the knitting pattern “economy instructions391” for a very reliable looking “Poppy the Pup” toy dog, from WWII era; sure to become someone’s firm friend.
The leaflet, number 391 by “Cronit” in their rationing “Homecraft Economy series” is very evocative of the make-do-and-mend spirit of the time, giving notes on how to recycle and re-use waste materials to make this toy.
There is also a helpful photograph of the finished body parts laid out flat for blocking before sewing up.
The dog is given as 16inches high but the wool and needles are quite fine, so the toy may well be bigger if made on DK (worsted) weight wool.
[ it takes approx 2.5oz/50g of 3ply wool {fingering weight} plus scraps; and no.10 (UK) needles {USA = no.3 ; metric 3.25 }.]
Sadly the original is not in great condition; with pencil notes and a tea-stain so it was clearly much loved and used! ( But I have digitally cleaned it up, it is clearly legible and reset so the instructions are easy to follow.)
